The Spaceship House Is Out Of This World!

I gathered my cheap digital camera and set out on a hunting trip for this mythical spaceship domicile. It turned out it was incredibly easy to find: in 5 minutes I was there.

Why in the world would anyone build a spaceship house on this short hilly street in Covington? The street itself is unimpressive, anchoring some older, ordinary-looking houses and some expensive looking condominiums overlooking the river.

The spaceship itself is surrounded by trees, and a wooden deck and fence enclosure. The front gate was locked, preventing casual exploration of the rear side and deck.

There is a central AC unit, gas & electric meter, and flowers on the back deck that look taken care of. I suppose I could find the owner of the property on the Kenton County auditor’s website, but there’s probably no great mystery to this spaceship.

From the street

Curtains prevent looking in the window. There’s a decal on the exterior that says “Beam me up Scotty.” And if you’re there in person, it’s easy to see the word “Futuro” on the side of the house that has since been painted over.

Partial view of the deck behind the house. I wonder how the view is?

  • Funny story behind this house. I know the guys that owned this thing for a while, I dont know if they still do. Anyway, they turned it into a club house aka a “batchlor pad” to get away from the ladies in there life. I’ve been in it…its pretty much a tricked out trailor.

  • My sister says that the guy who was a bachler moved out to take care of his preteen daughter (long time ago) because they needed more space. (Funny. Needing more space when you have a spaceship.)

  • ^^^ From the article above, they exported Futuros from Finland to all over the world, including America.

    - Futuros to Florida, Philadelphia, and California, USA, for use as dwellings, and one as a bank in a New Jersey shopping mall

Still doesn’t say how one ended up in Covington above the Cork N Bottle.

A white plastic house resembling a flying saucer, Futuro amazed many people. It was designed by architect Matti Suuronen in 1968. In advertisements, Futuro was typically depicted as if it had descended from the sky smack in the middle of a traditional Finnish forest landscape. The juxtaposition was a startling one. Futuro shook traditional Finnish housing architecture in many ways. Its innovative features included the use of plastic as building material, serial production, mobility, ellipsoid shape, and bright colour.

“Futuro represents the modern, comfortable way of housing - practical coziness. Futuro is the dwelling of future.”
    (Futuro brochure, late 1960s)
