Meet Cleaver Theatre! Cincinnati’s Premiere Horror Host Show
Imagine a TV show that plays bad B-horror and B-sci-fi movies. It’s a bit like MST3K (although with more pop-up trivia instead of talking) and a bit like Beakman’s World (crazy science experiments). Throw in a bit of wise-cracking, showcasing of small indie bands and film projects, and a lot of general goofing around, and you’ve got Meet Cleaver Theatre!
“The best description of our humble movie nights would be the by-product of a frightening (yet strangely erotic) copulation between Barbara Billingsley and Tim Burton… while Donna Reed watches.”
- Butch R. Cleaver
It’s called Horror Hosting.

So what is a horror host show?
Meet Cleaver Theatre is the first horror host program originating in Cincinnati, Ohio since the classic performances of “The Cool Ghoul” back in the 1970s. The show consists of movies (public domain or independent features shown with the creator’s consent) sandwiched between horror/comedy skits and other short subjects. This is a traditional horror host format. For more information on current and legendary horror hosts and their programs, please visit The Horror Host Underground.
Cincinnati’s premiere Horror Host show is Meet Cleaver Theatre, hosted by Cincinnatian Butch R. Cleaver. In addition to the TV show described above, which they produce right here in town (15+ months), you can catch them online, and catch them performing live trivia game show action at sci-fi conventions everywhere!
Plans are in works to take this concept to the next level and host a live B-movie show at a bar/coffeeshop/venue near you! They propose teaming up with a band or two, showing a public domain stinker… insert some fun 1950’s classroom films, have a game show portion with prizes(!), maybe have a magician perform as well, and you’ve got a full night of entertainment! Similar events have been successful in Chicago, Cleveland, and Nashville.
