Andrews spent about a half-century – from June 1929 to April 1981 – erecting his castle. He lived there in simple quarters. It was his work-in-progress, a scale replica of a 16th-century medieval castle.

Physically, most people could not endure the rigors of building such a place, but then, Harry Andrews was no ordinary man. Well into his 80s, he lugged quart milk cartons filled with cement across his property to build the castle. He estimated he carried 56,000 buckets of stones from the river to his castle, spent only $12,000 and worked 22,000 hours on the place.It was the headquarters of his Knights of the Golden Trail, which he formed in 1927 to save society from decadence. The group, which met at his castle and consisted of boys in his Sunday school and school classes, took only one vow: the Ten Commandments.

Today, Andrews is gone, and the group still operates the formidable castle for the public.
