New Year’s Eve at The Rake’s End

Recently, I’ve developed this strong distaste for going to bars on what we call “Amateur’s Nights”. You know what I’m talking about… St. Patty’s, New Year’s Eve, Cinco De Mayo… nights were people who rarely go out to bars descend upon them in droves. They come with taxi-cabs, limos, and wallets full of I’m-gonna-spill-my-beer-and-puke-on-your-girlfriend.
Me, I’m [...]

Halloween and RHPS in Cincinnati

This Halloween, I finally did something I had been planning to do since discovering that it was even possible in Cincinnati. I went to a viewing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show in a theater supported by a live cast. The Denton Affair (rhps.net) has been showing cast supported viewings of RHPS since 1979 in [...]

Mustache Bash

Oh, the Mustache. By definition, it is facial hair on the outer surface of the upper lip. It has grown its way into our history on such notable faces as Salvador Dali, Groucho Marx, and Adolf Hitler. They come in more flavors than Graeters Ice Cream, including such beauties as the Walrus, the Horseshoe, [...]

Heard and Not Seen

On Saturday, May 7th, I went to the Blind Cafe in the North Presbyterian Church in Northside, Cincinnati. The patrons filled in the pews by table assignment while waiting to be led to our respective tables. When it was our turn, we were instructed to hold onto the shoulder of the person in front of [...]

Cirque Toweling Off After a Brief Swim

Have you seen Cirque du Soleil yet? There’s still time (and still seats)! I was lucky enough to be able to see the show — from the front row — before the river ran through it. But the real treat is the one you get to share… I was able to bring my [...]

The Blind Cafe

The Blind Cafe pushes you to stop depending on your eyes and to focus on your other senses. Here is a description I pulled from their website:
“Chaos should be regarded as fantastic news.” — Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche
“Welcome to The Blind Cafe. This is NOT just a dinner in the dark… it’s a community experience where [...]

A Short Q&A for Cirque du Soleil

1) How many different styles of music did the band perform?
“To create the musical score for OVO, Berna Ceppas combined the sounds of bossa nova and samba with funk and electro music. And, as you might expect from a Brazilian – there is a lot of percussion in the [...]

Over the Rhine and Ballet

When I say “Over the Rhine”, I’m not talking about our unique and historical neighborhood, I’m talking about that band that Cincinnatians are all weirdly excited about.  They are performing with the Cincinnati Ballet this weekend, April 29-30, and all you weird Over the Rhine fans can get two pleasures for the price of one.  [...]

The Cirque is Coming, the Cirque is Coming!

Circus: Elephants, Tigers, Fleas — you know the drill.  Cirque: People costumed as bugs (at least this time) flying through the air, performances unlike anything you have likely seen before and at least twice as entertaining, and all without harming a single animal.  Not bad.  World-renowned Cirque du Soleil is coming to Cincinnati.
Make Cincinnati Weird [...]
