Taking Command

With the possible NFL lockout and all of the bullshit that comes with it, I’m at a point where I need a new favorite local sports team to watch. Between Mike Brown, Carson Palmer, Ocho Stinko, and almost the entire cast, I have had it with the Bengals.

I want action, suspense, intensity, and of course, athletisism, without the cry babies and money-hungry hippos. I thought maybe I would start watching the Cyclones, or Cincinnati Roller Girls, or — shit, the Reds have been kicking ass with little or no crying, but baseball has never been my sport.

Then like falling into a gold mine, I came across the Cincinnati Commandos.

Haha. You’ll see me at the game.

PS – No hard feelings, Bengals.. let’s clean house though..

I’ve been meaning to write about these ladies for a long time. I’ve been trying to make it to a match for even longer. Maybe this, their 3rd season, will hold the first match I get to see.

Proud members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the Cincinnati Rollergirls are Cincinnati’s all-female, amateur, flat-track roller derby team. Their home turf is the Cincinnati Gardens.

The schedule says their next home games are Saturday, April 12, and Saturday, April 17.

They’ll Still Kick Your Ass

Forget indoor soccer. Forget arena football. Forget minor league basketball. Forget minor league hockey. Forget baseball, football, college basketball for that matter. Forget.. forget.. forget where I was going with that.

But in any case, Cincinnati’s newest sports team is here! The Cincinnati Sizzle! The newest member of the National Women’s Football Association. Sorry Marvin, but they got next.

Coached by former Bengal favorite Ickey Woods, who got out of the flooring business and back onto the gridiron, The Sizzle are sure to, well, sizzle in this sports hungry market.

The biggest difference, Woods said, is getting used to estrogen in a formerly testosterone-dominated sport. Think there’s no crying in baseball? Try NFL-style football.
“There are a lot more emotional things to deal with because women are more sensitive than men,” Woods said. “You’ve got to be a little more patient.”

Run Like Hell

On the Friday before Halloween, as darkness falls, an extra sense of adventure cloaks Walnut Hills Cemetery. Hundreds of runners put themselves in this Stephen King scene each year for Run Like Hell.
“It’s like a big Halloween party, only everyone is running down the road. It can get scary, I guess, but the fact that you get to run through a graveyard in the dark, that’s cool.”
“There are maybe one or two other events like this in the country,” says Jill Soldano, an event coordinator for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Cincinnati chapter.
